we went to church this evening and it was PACKED!
turns out it was first communion for a whole parish of kids. think of about 100 kids decked out in all white. very angelic. they all looked so serious.
that was the good.
and then... there was the bad.
it was really packed so it was tough finding a seat by the time we got there. plenty of parents with videocams and the like. one indian family with a little girl gestured that there were 2 seats next to them, so we slid in next to them. the lady on the other side of us told us that one of the seats was taken, so kale and i squeezed in together, and the indian guy was so nice, he kept on sliding over even with his daughter on his lap. then this skinny little chinese lady came in and told us really loudly, and rudely, i might add that this was her seat. she had gone to the toilet and she was back. duh. she then repeated it about 3 times. about how there was only 1 seat. and only 1 kneeling thingamajig. i told her, fine, i'll share with my husband, don't worry. kale told her to relax, it's church for heaven's sake. but she kept on grumbling.
a guy behind us gestured that there was an extra seat so i climbed back there and that solved the problem, thank goodness. i CANNOT believe how self-absorbed she was. i mean, you're in CHURCH! you're supposed to be in a sharing mood.. but obviously not. what a jackass. and the whole time i was at mass, i was staring daggers at her back. i know, not charitable, and not christ-like, but i couldn't help it. i could not believe someone could be as self-centered and rude as that. i managed to sorta forget about it once the Friar started addressing the kids cos they really were so earnest and soo cute.. but yeah. left a bad taste in my mouth.
then after mass, she pushed her way out of the pew before the recessional hymn was done, and barged down to the baptismal font in the middle of the church for holy water (as opposed to the holy water receptacles near the doors) and rushing out. man. she was one nervous and frantic woman. sigh.
i guess i shouldn't be so judgemental.. maybe she really has other issues in her life. but yeah, if a father juggling a sleeping kid can make way for a fellow worshipper, why can't a single, skinny woman?
i guess i really need to remember that no one is perfect, and that i probably have pissed someone off similarly at some point in time without knowing it.. so i should be more forgiving and understanding. oh, to be a better and bigger person..
